Application Engineer
Reports to: Director – New Product Development
FLSA Status: Exempt
SUMMARY
Evaluates physical properties of various polymeric materials to investigate their ability to meet new product requirements. Works on various machinery to optimize manufacturing application processes and produce sample parts for customers. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines, plus input from internal and external experts, as well as technical publications and any other means to perform the functions of the job. Primary job functions will require exercising independent judgment, with regular support from supervisor.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Does testing to understand initial behavior/properties of identified polymers that are used to solve customer issues. Writes summary reports to highlight key data.
- Applies new formulations onto parts, which are often fasteners, and then tests according to specifications.
- Prepares concise test reports to demonstrate how materials perform in various testing, along with the application techniques used to produce samples.
- Researches and locates the best measurement equipment needed to test critical attributes of new formulations.
- With support from supervisor, contacts suppliers to identify whatever materials or process equipment are needed to develop a next new product, working covertly to keep technical advancements confidential.
- Works safely, observing all company safety policies, and actively participates in our safety program. Uses all necessary PPE to perform the necessary lab work.
- Keeps strict confidentiality on all lab work being performed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
- Regularly required to stand, walk and sit for various lengths of time (as is typical in a lab/manufacturing environment).
- Occasionally required to lift in excess of 30 pounds.
- Manufacturing environment; safety glasses & hearing protection are required at all times on the production floor.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or other comparable discipline required.
- Intern/Co-op experience in manufacturing environment is desirable.
- Experience with conducting laboratory experiments is a plus.
